di Braies

The most iconic lake in the Dolomites. Wooden boathouse, turquoise water, peaks that rise straight from the shore. We have photographed here across many seasons – we know when the gates open, which mooring catches the morning light, and how to make 90 minutes of sunrise work for you.

Why Lago di Braies

Still water.
No crowds.
One hour.

Lago di Braies draws thousands of visitors a day in summer – but before they arrive, the lake belongs to you. We start early. The Dolomite peaks mirror themselves in glassy water, the wooden boats sit quietly at their moorings, and the light does things a studio could never replicate.

We have shot here in June fog, July heat, and September frost. We know the permit process, the boat hire timing through La Palafitta, and the exact spots where the reflection hits perfectly. You bring yourselves. We bring the rest.

How a session works

Sunrise.
Vows.
The boat.

We meet at the lake at first light – usually before 6 a.m. in peak summer. The first moments are always a walk along the shore as the sky shifts. Then the boat: quiet, drifting, just the two of you and the mountains. If you are exchanging vows, the dock by the boathouse is where the stillness is absolute.

A half-day session runs two to three hours. For full elopement days we combine the lake with an afternoon hike, a mountain refuge lunch or – for the most extraordinary option – a helicopter flight to peaks in the Dolomites that no trail can reach.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you
need to know.

What is the best time of day for photography at Lago di Braies?

Sunrise is by far the best time. The gates to the lake open at dawn and the first hour gives you perfectly still water, no crowds and warm golden light that turns the Dolomite reflections into something extraordinary. We typically start between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. depending on the season.

How do I book the iconic rowboat for photos?

Rowboat hire is managed by the boathouse at Lago di Braies (La Palafitta). We coordinate the timing so you have the boat during the best light window. Boats are available from early morning in summer – we advise booking your photography session first so we can plan around their availability.

Do I need a permit for a photo session at Lago di Braies?

Commercial photography sessions at Lago di Braies require a location permit. We handle this for every session we book there – it is included in our coordination and does not cost you extra effort.

How far is Lago di Braies from Innsbruck, Bolzano and Cortina?

Lago di Braies is roughly 2 hours from Innsbruck and Bolzano, and about 1 hour from Cortina d'Ampezzo. The road from Niederdorf / Braies village to the lake is scenic and easy. We can advise on the best approach route depending on where you are staying.

Can we combine a Lago di Braies session with a helicopter elopement in the Dolomites?

Yes – and it makes for one of the most memorable days imaginable. We start at dawn at the lake for vows and boat portraits, then fly by helicopter to peaks and ridges that no trail can reach for the golden-hour finale. This is exactly the kind of day we love to plan and photograph.

How many times have you photographed at Lago di Braies?

We have photographed weddings, elopements and couple sessions at Lago di Braies across many seasons and in every kind of light. We know the quiet corners, the boat timings, the permit process and the angles that make each session feel entirely different. One of our images from Lago di Braies was featured as Rangefinder Magazine Photo of the Day.
